I’m thrilled to have my story “Taking Them There” on the shortlist for the 2014 Quebec Writing Competition.
I started this short story in Nancy Zafris’ workshop at the Kenyon Writer’s Summer School in 2012. Just as well I don’t write novels – imagine how long that would take!
You can read all ten shortlisted stories online and vote for your favorite for the QWC Reader’s Choice Prize. Voting is open until November 10.
The winner of the Reader’s Choice Prize will be announced on Saturday, November 15 on CBC Radio One’s Cinq à Six at 5 p.m. (88.5 FM)
The grand prize winners will be announced on Tuesday, November 18 at the QWF Gala.
Fantastic piece, Susi. From opening to ending. Congrats on being in the top ten.

Thanks, Chris. It felt so different from my usual style (I’ve never written a ‘you’ pov before) that I didn’t quite know what to think of it at first! But I’m very happy it made it into the QWC shortlist.

2nd person pov is one of the toughest to write from and to do well, but you nailed it.

Thanks, Chris. Thanks a wonderful compliment. The 2nd person pov was in the prompt. I’d never tried it before and thought it would be too difficult so I tried the other two prompts offered. They didn’t work for me so I started this at nearly midnight and once started, just kept going.
